Da Brat is an American rapper. Her first album Funkdafied sold nearly a million copies. It makes her the first female solo rap artist to receive a platinum certification and the second overall female rap singer after Salt-N-Pepa. She got two Grammy award nominations. Her Funkdafied and Not Tonight songs achieved top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100. She also has some commercial hit songs.

Early Life

Shawntae Harris is the real name of Da Brat. She was born on 14th April 1974, Chicago, Illinois, United States. Her father David Ray McCoy is a businessman, and her other name is Beverly Calloway who is a city bus driver. Her parents never get married. She was raised primarily in the West Side district of the city. Da Brat’s paternal half-sister is LisaRaye McCoy who is now an American actress and model.

Da Brat was eventually raised in two various households. She lived part of the time with her mom and grandmother. She attended the Apostolic church four times a week, and there she sang in the choir. She attended Kenwood academy in her sophomore and junior year. Then she graduated from the Academy of Scholastic Achievement.

Career

In 1992, Da Brat got a huge break when she won a local rap contest. After two years, she released her first album named ‘Funkdafied’. It entered the rap albums chart at number 11. This album went platinum, making her the first solo female rapper to sell one million copies. This song reached number 1 place in the rap album chart and 6th piston on the Billboard hot 100.
Then she released her second album Anuthatatrum in 1996. It includes the hit single ‘ Ghetto love’, and she was featured with Kriss Kross in this song.
Da Brat made her film debut in 1996 in Kazaam film with Shaq.
In 1999, she appeared as a guest artist on ‘Heartbreaker’ which is remixed by Carey.
During the early 2000s, she released her ‘Unrestricted’ album which is her third full-length album. But it does not get more fame compared to her previous albums.
