Harish Salve Biography

Harish Salve was born in 1955, June 22 in Warud, Sindkheda, Dhule, Maharashtra State, India to N. K. P. Salve and Ambriti Salve. His father was a chartered accountant and politician of the Indian National Congress Party, on the other hand, his mother Ambriti was a doctor. He had a legal family background where his grandfather was a successful criminal lawyer. When it comes to Harish Salve education, Salve did his schooling at St. Francis De’Sales High School in Nagpur.


He achieved his Chartered Accountancy from ICAI and LLB from Nagpur University. Besides, Harish was passionate about music from early childhood but fortunately turned his career into the legal field.

Harish Salve began his career exploration as a chartered accountant and practiced chartered accountancy in taxation. But a big turning point in Salve’s career came in the year 1975 with Harish Salve internship. In 1980, he began his legal career as an intern and later on as a full-time lawyer at J.B. Dadachandji & Company. During this time, he served Nani Palkhivala in the Minerva Mills case.


Later, Salve was designated as a Senior Counsel by the Delhi High Court. From 1980 to 1986, Salve toiled with former Attorney General, Soli Sorabjee. At the age of 43, in November 1999, Salve became the Solicitor General of India and carried the office till 2002.


He also strived for Tata Group and ITC Limited. Harish made an outstanding performance in the case of Vodafone in its $2.5 billion dispute with the Indian Government.
