Martin Luther King Jr After his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and civil-rights activist who had a seismic impact on race relations in the United States in the mid-1950s.

Among his many efforts, King led the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

The King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, among many other honors. He is remembered as one of the most influential and inspiring African-American leaders in history.

Born on January 15, 1929, as Michael King Jr., The King and Williams families had their roots in rural Georgia. Martin Jr.’s grandfather A. D. Williams served as a rural minister for years and then moved to Atlanta in 1893.

He captured the small, struggling Ebenezer Baptist Church with about 13 members and made it a powerful congregation. He married Jenny Celeste Park and had a child who survived Alberta.

 He married Alberta in 1926 after eight years of courtship. The newlyweds moved to A. D.’s home in Atlanta. Martin Sean stepped in as the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church on his father-in-law’s death in 1931.

He also became a successful minister and adopted the name Martin Luther King Sr. in honor of Martin Luther, the German Protestant religious organization. In due course, Michael Jr. will follow his father’s leadership and take the name himself.

The king had an older sister, Willie Christine, and a younger brother, Alfred Daniel Williams. Raja children grew up in a safe and loving environment. Martin Sr. was more disciplinary, while his wife’s gentleness easily balanced the father’s strict hand.

Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, King entered public school at the age of five. He was baptized in May 1936, but this incident had little effect on him.

The incident was traumatic for the king, more so because he was watching a parade against his parents’ wishes when she died. Distracted by the news, the young king allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window at the family’s home.

Education and Spiritual Development

 He was accomplished in all his studies, and was the Veda adjudicator of his class in 1951, and was elected president of the Students’ Union. He also earned a fellowship for graduate studies.
