Michelle McCool appeared at the WWE as a contestant in the 2004 WWE Diva Search where she missed to Christy Hemme. In November 2004, she was contracted by WWE for three years agreement. Soon, she rose in a backstage section on SmackDown as a fitness trainer. She made her introduction in singles on March 24, 2005, but she lost to Dawn Marie.

Later, she was sent to Deep South Wrestling and was hospitalized after having an allergic reaction. In 2006, she reverted to SmackDown and acquired her first singles match. Next, she defeated Natalya to become the inaugural WWE Divas Champion.

In 2009, she defeated Melina with the help of Alicia Fox to win her first Women Championship. Later, she allied with Layla to form a duo termed LayCool and had a provocative feud with Mickie James.
