Shabana Azmi was born in Hyderabad to a Muslim, Syed family. His house name was Munni. After graduating from Psychology, Shabana Azmi took a course from the Film and Television Institute of India.

She married Javed Akhtar on 9 December 1984. Javed is a Bollywood screenwriter, poet, and lyricist. Shabana Azmi is Javed Akhtar’s second wife. He has a son Farhan Akhtar and daughter Zoya Akhtar from his first wife Honey Irani.

Shabana Azmi was all set to marry theater and film actor Benjamin Gilani, who was also engaged to him. But, unfortunately, both parted after rumors of her romance with Shekhar Kapoor. It was on the set of Ishq Ishq Ishq that they met, and what started as a friendship turned into something else. Although they split up, Shabana agreed to lead a play in Shekhar Kapoor’s debut feature film Masoom.

Azmi’s parents had great doubts about this successful match, as it was Akhtar’s second marriage; Previously Honey Irani, who was also a modern writer in the Hindi film industry and with whom she had two children: Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar. However, Akhtar and Azmi’s love was very strong and the affair lasted for six years until Honey Irani was divorced in 1984.

Television career

Shabana Azmi naturally made her debut on the small screen with the TV series Anupama, where she essayed a traditional woman who naturally wanted more freedom from society. Years later, she appeared in a cameo in Indian television drama 24, aired on Colors TV. Based on the American series of the same name, the successful show cast Anil Kapoor in the lead role.

Throughout her career, Shabana Azmi has been a part of several stage productions, such as M. s. Cathay’s White Horoscope (1980), and Feroz Abbas Khan’s Amrita. In 2014, she starred in the British production Happy Birthday Sunita, staged in Dubai, UK and India.
