He began his education in Bob Bondurant race school as from a very early age, he was very much interested in racing. After getting out of college he decided to chase his passion as his career.

The first significant appearance made by Shelby was in the years 2010 and 2011 in the Skip Barber competition. In 2011, his first professional debut was driving a Ford Mustang in the competition of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. Then with Andretti Autosport in the year 2012, Shelby moved to the United States in the F2000 National Championship. In this competition, he held the position 8th in points and fourth at Road America. He carried on with Andretti Autosport in Pro Mazda Championship in 2013 and finisher third in points. Finally, he signed to Andretti Autosport and then took part in the Indy Lights series in 2015.
