He was the first boy child in the Poonawalla family and his parents are Sarfaraz Poonawalla and Yasmeen Poonawalla.

He also has a sibling, who is his younger brother in relation and his name is Shehzad Poonawalla. Shehzad is a Congress leader, lawyer, and activist. Both the Poonawalla brothers opposed the presidential issues in the Indian Congress Party.
